Project 12 x 2 - 1, Scene 16: 101 Hawker Food House

Hunger is the best sauce in the world.
- Cervantes
Trying out 101 Hawker Food House is a unanimous call between me and Katlina after we saw it this one time we are passing by Buendia-Ayala.

The place is located along a strip of hole-in-the-wall eateries along Urban Avenue. Kung nasa main gate ng Makati Med facing Buendia, just take the road going to Buendia then take the first left-turn (may Mercury Drug sa kanto). That should be Urban Avenue, and 101 should be on the left side of the road.

Chicha:
  • Thai Bagoong Rice
  • Kung Pao Chicken
  • Char Kway Teow
  • Lemonade
  • Milo Dinosaur
  • Pandan Pudding

But it works for me, dahil hindi naman ako mahilig sa bagoong. For all I know, baka yun na yung nalalasahan kong maalat. In any case, I liked it. Kanin pa lang ulam na. It has pork strips to boot.

manok na niluto sa istilong Kung Paw

Panalo yung kung pao chicken. Tamis anghang ang lasa (but more on the sweet part) nung marinade, slathered over breaded fried chicken. It's around 6 or 7 small pieces of chicken. Most Western-version of the dish has ground peanuts deep-fried with it. Buti itong kanila, wala. Hindi ako kumakain ng mani! Haha.

Not sure if it's always like that pero mas masarap sana kung mas madaming laman kesa buto.

pansit na lutong Tyar Kway Tyaw

Nothing special from the char kway teow. For a supposedly flavorful food, matabang ang luto ng sa kanila. Hindi man lang maanghang to expect the least.

Yung in-order naming kung pao comes with a free soup at lemonade. Soup is as we expected, not much flavor in it. And the lemonade tastes like no lemonade at all. Hindi maasim at hindi rin matabang. Parang malamig na tubig lang. Hehe.

Pauso ito sa Singapore and 101 is heaven-sent to have included it on their menu. We liked it!

puding na may pandan

Pandan pudding ang dessert namin. I expected something sweeter from their variant. The last two times we tried pandan pudding, they are consistently outright sweet albeit coming from Thai restos. So una kong naisip, baka gento yung version ng Singapore. The taste kinda grows on me though (ako pa nga ang umubos). Still, I'm not a fan. I want my pudding straight-out matamis.

Chechebureche:
The menu has a LOT to choose from. I can go on for weeks eating here and still not have tried everything. Ganun kadami ang options.

half of the menu, the other half is on the flipside

Most of the main dishes have an option to be served with rice (toppings) or ala carte (short order). For couples, I recommend taking the toppings since they serve the dishes generously anyway (can serve two).

Relax. At the least, hindi try hard na magpaka-Oriental look. KISS rule, kumbaga... Keep It Simple and Stupid. Medyo mainit lang yung lugar. Pero kasi wala pang masyadong tao nung pumunta kami, kaya nakapatay pa lahat ng ceiling fan. Nakalimutan lang siguro buksan... sige na nga.

The waiters are polite and easy to deal with.

K.I.S.S.

Kaching!:
P100 to P200 ang price range ng mga ulam. Can be more (up to P300) kapag yung mga premium sahog ang in-order (e.g. salmon or prawns).

Still it's comparatively cheap than most Singaporean-hawker food place na napuntahan namin.

Hatol:
Okay siyang dayuhin just for the sheer variety of food available.

Karamihan ng dishes ay Singaporean-inspired, if not cooked authentic Singaporean. So it's still a good way to check out what's "in" sa panlasa ng ating kapit-bayan.

Definitely, I should try some of their other stuffs.

Project 12 x 2 - 1: The Baguio Gauntlet, Part Deux (Jim's Retro Diner)

Sitting at the table doesn't make you a diner, unless you eat some of what's on that plate.
- Malcolm X
My Baguio gauntlet, part deux! Nangyari ito nung nakaraang four-day long weekend, amidst a Signal #3 cyclone!

not even Mina can stop me eating

This time I'm with the Couch Potato herself (plus friends in the office). Walang bagyo bagyo... foood triiip!!!

Link to the first Baguio food trip entries.

hindi ko ito ipagpapalit

Good Taste is Good Taste! It will always be my number one tsibog spot in Baguio for the sheer bang-for-your-bucks-ness of the place! I mean, come on, a very delicious serving of your lutong-bahay food that serves 3 to 4 persons per order at P120 to P130 only?? Come on!

In short, I made a believer out of them (which never fails, everytime I bring people there). Atay-yay-yay!

perv!

50's Diner is a staple. Parang tourist spot na ito ng Baguio. Kumander Kat and the gang enjoyed it and the huge servings. Nuff said.

Unfortunately, Oh My Gulay! is closed for the four-day long weekend. Badtrip. So we ended up some place else. Sayangs.

Moving on. Ibabahagi ko yung iba pang kinainan namin during that stay. Humandang magutom!

Dahil sarado ang Oh My Gulay!, dito kami bumagsak para kumain. It's on the same building as OMG VOCAS (La Azotea Bulding sa Session Road). Bago pumasok sa entrance ng building, may stairs heading to the basement sa left side. Andun ang Jim's.

When I saw it, una kong naisip rip-off ito ng 50's Diner. When I went inside, tingin ko rip-off ito ng 50's Diner. When I checked the menu, sure nako rip-off ito ng 50's Diner! Haha!

sino si jim??

Di ko sure kung sinadya nilang gayahin yung genre ng 50's Diner (or in that case, kung sino ba ang unang gumaya) but they are doing well at it. The place is reminiscent of old American diners from its interiors up to the choices of food. Mas US fastfood lang yung mga pagkain dito than sa 50's Diner since sa 50's mas madami-dami pang options for rice meals and other local stuffs. Dito wala masyado.

Ang chicha:

Bonnie and Clyd Combo
    * Cheeseburger

    * Fried Chicken
    * French Fries
    * Iced Tea

bonnie and clyd (without an "e")
  • Buffalo Wings
  • Lemonade
  • Diner's Burger
  • Spaghetti and Meatballs
  • Banana Split
Kulang talaga ang spelling ng Bonnie and Clyd nila. Hindi ko alam kung may pag-asa pang itama nila ito o may kamag-anak talaga silang ang pangalan ay Clyd without an "e". In any case, yung combo ay binubuo ng cheeseburger (na walang special sa lasa, just your typical burger + cheese + greens), spaghetti (na trip ko kasi Pinoy style... matamis at madaming meat chunks), fried chicken (na hindi masarap ang breading), french fries (ilang piraso ng malalaking hiwa ng patatas), at iced tea.

chicken na, buffalo pa

Umaanghang habang tumatagal yung sauce nung buffalo wings. Pero yung general lasa niya ay manamis-namis. It's served in pieces of four at may kasamang french fries + garnish.

everything in it

Enticing yung Diner's Burger dahil bukod sa patty, meron din itong ham, bacon, at itlog. All in, kumbaga. Bagay na bagay sa gutom. It's also served with fries at garnish. Peng! Peng! Peng! Peng!

half a bread

Spaghetti and meatballs looked delicious at katulad ng spagh sa Bonnie and Clyd combo, Pinoy-style sauce din ang gamit. Maliliit yung meatballs. Apat na piraso yung isinilbi sa amin. It's served with half-a-slice of toasted bread. Eh?? Hindi pa talaga inisang buo.

saging ni Mystica

Yung banana split ang panalo. Two bananas in three scoop of ice cream flavors of your choice. At syempre, may mandatory cherry topping + peanut bits (argh).

Simple lang yung menu, and the items there are quite varied. Madaming pwedeng subukang kainin. Pero gaya ng nauna ko nang sinabi, most of them are fast food meals.

old ads

close kami kaya compressed

attentive waiters

They also share toilets with an adjacent bar and a Korean resto, kaya hindi magandang tanawin (at amuyin) ang kubeta nila.

Kaching!:
P70 to 130 ang price range ng mga pagkain.

Mura na ito kumpara sa mga leading fastfoods sa Manila that offers the same stuffs nang mas mahal at walang masyadong options. At least dito, meron pang ambiance.

half of the menu, the other half is on the flipside

Haven't tried how "giant" are the giant burgers na nagkakahalaga ng P170 to P200. Pero I'm sure this can at least serve two.

I say, a must-visit pa din siya when in Baguio. And vice versa.
