Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert!

I wasn't able to watch the first "Pirates of the Carribean" but i just hate it when a sequel can't stand with a complete plot outline without relying much on its precursor. This is exaclty what "Dead Man's Chest" is all about.

Captain Jack Sparrow is back on another swash-buckling adventure after the sinister Davy Jones returned from the depths (literally) to claim what he promised years before - eternal servitude to him and his crew of the dreaded Flying Dutchman.

Not in anyway wanting to repay his debts to the phantom pirate, Captain Sparrow and the rest of his crew of the Black Pearl embarked on a journey to seek the legendary Heart of Davy Jones (for reasons unknown... but I believe and was implied that Jack wanted a bargaining leverage against his debt to Jones). With Jack is a mystical compass that showed them the way to the Heart. This same compass is the reason why Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner got tangled up again in the whole adventure.

Much action scenes followed and by the movie's end they were able to recover the Heart, encountering the Flying Dutchman along the way. The Black Pearl was able to elude the ghastly ship but Davy Jones summmoned his monstrous Kraken which ended up wrecking the Black Pearl itself and swallow Jack Sparrow whilst Turner, Swann, and some of the crew escaped on a boat.

It all ended up with... uhm... no ending at all!

After all the debacle, lose ends just flew everywhere and there's no concrete ending/resolution to hold on to. Watching and understanding it was like trying to climb a rope which is greased on the end. Gets?

What happened to disgraced Commodore Norrington?
What did Lord Beckett do to the Heart of Davy Jones?
How do the Black Pearl survivors at Tia Dalma's intend to bring Sparrow back? Back from where, or back to what??
What happened to Governor Swann?
What will Davy Jones gonna do, now that he knows his Heart is out there somewhere and endangered?
What happened to Bootstrap Bill and how the hell did he managed to sneak into Black Pearl?
Why did Elizabeth Swann chained Jack Sparrow at the Black Pearl before they escaped the Kraken?
(If you haven't watched the first movie) Who the f-word is Captain Barbossa??
(If you haven't watched the first movie) Who the f-word is Tia??
(If you haven't watched the first movie) Who the f-word is Ragetti and Pintel??
And the list goes on and on because the characters from the first movie were poorly introduced...

The entire movie was a marketing flop to start with... it just shouted, "Shut up and just wait for Part Three!" which is of course if you're a religious follower of the film, you will... but thing is if you're not and you're just a casual movie-goer happening to have stumbled upon the movie, you're like wasting your bucks, baby. Bigtime.

"Palubag loob" yung effects at production, though. I like how they merged the mythic components to the buccaneer feel of the film settings. Hands up on those regard. I like the speckles of humor too. I think Depp had a great work delivering some of em. I like the Ragetti and Pintel comedy duo too. Not "that" funny but at least they don't suck as the storyline (if there is).

It's a shame they have to be this incoherent on a movie theme that is so rich and vivid to work on. I was like half-asleep on the middle part of it. Boo... rrring. I have this feeling that the first movie was good but true or not, they din't have to make a sequel that is sooo dependent "information-wise" to the prior movie and sooo dependent "conclusion-wise" to its next part. The result was a "non-movie movie". It's like a bridge, a preparatory story... Part 1's epilogue and Part 3's prologue. If you know how epilogues and prologues work, imagine reading only that part of a story... that's how it feels watching this movie.

Sayang. The casts were great, no doubt there. The entire production was cool... costumes, CG effects, and all. But the plot is crap.

2.5 gulamans.

Goodluck kung panonoorin nyo. =)

word of advice: watch the first one. you 've lost your right to ridicule a sequel if you havent seen the first one. im all for the sequel should be able to hold its own, but that's what it is: a sequel. superman returns was a sequel. why didnt you question where the kid came from? you said "naka-iskor pala si pareng super..." which obviously means you didnt see the sex scene in superman 2. but you didnt attack this "plothole". so i would expect that you would have reacted the same way with pirates 2. havent seen it yet tho.

kelan ka ga uwi?

i agree with jai skizzy.

since the movie is a sequel, you should have at least watched part 1 before doing the review or doing some research or better yet watch the movie again in slow mo or with a subtitle. apparently, you were indeed half asleep during the movie. answers to some (pretty much all) of your questions can be found in the movie.

and oh, pirates was really meant to be a trilogy or series of movies...like spider-man the movie, lord of the rings.. which like dead man's chest didn't have to make detailed re-introduction of characters in the sequels.

oh well, i guess your review was written in disgust. not fair at all.

jai: i iz back! di ko trip yung ganung klaseng film. parang komiks na hindi "wakasan".

cruise: hehehe bagay no... Pirata! dami nyan dito sa Pinas.

lica: hehe thanks sa tiwala. although like pareng jai sampled, pwedeng magkaiba tayo ng view on how to take a film. hopefully magkapareho na lang tayo ng perspective sa pelikula.

rachel: too bad i wasnt able to catch my answers. i know there'll be a third part, but structuring a movie to over-patronize the introduction of a sequel could be bad. take your examples, lotr 2 or spiderman 2... both can fairly hold on as independent storylines (lalo na Spiderman). LOTR forgiveable pa in a sense that LOTR was a popularly known trilogy but look at how they trickled in info that will eventually lead to its sequel. hindi gaanong bitin. i mean, at least may reasonable ending yung pelikula. :)
