Dating Lalake Tatlo: Ang Huling Tumayo

X-Men 3: The Last Stand
Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert!

The third installment of the film saw the ascension of Jean Grey as her powerful dark entity, Phoenix. Just as mankind discovered a cure to the mutant "disease", the war rages on between those who were against the cure (Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants) and those who have sworn allegiance to justice (Professor X and his X-Men). With the death of Cyclops and Professor Charles himself (both caused by Jean Grey), the X-Men were hardpressed to oppose the evil mutants which were bolstered by the presence of Phoenix. The rest of the story did not really expressed vital relevance to the whole picture so I'll jump to the final attempt to sack the laboratory in Alcatraz for the cure. This has been the climax where the face off between the warring factions decided the outcome of the whole ruckus. In the end, Wolverine was able to kill Phoenix while the rest of the team contained the evil mutant threat. The post resolution scenes shouted PART FOUR, when Magneto was able to start wearing off his anti-mutant shot and Dr. Moira implied Xavier's resurrection by calling the "consciousness-less" man.

I was disappointed how some of the adaptation from the komikbuks went, if there were any at all...

1. Phoenix and her more evil counterpart, the Dark Phoenix were avatars of fire. They were always signified as enveloped with thick searing tongues of flame. Human Torch of Fantastic Four comes to mind. The movie Phoenix was nowhere near exhibiting such display. All she did was fling debris all over the place. Bleuch.
2. The original Phoenix was a cosmic entity that found Jean Grey's body a viable host to its incredible power. In the movie, the Phoenix was nothing more than Jean Grey's darkside consciousness. I don't dig.
3. Professor Charles Xavier and Juggernaut are brothers. The movie Professor X didn't even recognize his brother Cain Marco when they met at the Grey's residence.

I guess it's just too taxing for the screenplay writers to come up with a solid storyline that incorporates events from the comicbooks. Still, they could have done better by inserting twists on the plot by merging it with relevant comicbook events than just simply highlighting the return of Phoenix. The whole narrative is just too lame and simple for me.

Also, major characters from the first two X-Men movies were absent. Noticeable of em all was Nightcrawler. That blue-skinned devil is just so cool that taking him off of X-Men 3 is just a major bummer. Sabretooth's not around anymore too. I didn't like how they portrayed him in X-Men 1 anyway. I wished Toad and his honchos were also present on this movie even if they're just in for cameos. At least with that, comics afficionados will have more mutants to recognize and get excited about.

I think it's crap when they let the young Shadowcat join em for the "last stand" in Alcatraz but didn't bring in the rest of the Academy's students or at least the more combat-trained ones. I mean, they know that they'll be bloody outnumbered by Magneto's Brotherhood, but wasn't it plain nuts when they still pushed through with the odds apparently against them?? I believe they should be wiser than that or maybe they simply just wanted to die. **Or maybe the director guaranteed them beforehand that they will win anyway so don't bother bringing in reinforcements**

I would really like to write more stuffs about the movie but it'll all just end up with me ranting more too so to save my energy from whining, I'd rather summarize that the film is only appreciable because of its awesome movie magics but scrap your expectations of an interesting plot outline. It will only disappoint you.

Random musings for the characters: Kittie Pryde is such a sweetie. Jean Grey looks like one of the current Aussie Big Brother housemates. Wolverine's attitude was well depicted. I liked how they made up the Beast's prosthetics. Angel's wings are effin cool. I don't dig how Storm was mauled down several times by a speed freak chick (Callisto) that should not be a match with her elemental prowess. Juggernaut's armors are lacking. Pyro's capabilities are mediocre for his stature as Magneto's lieutenant. Ian McKellen (Magneto) acted better here than in "Da Vinci Code". Mystique is a hottie. I think Anna Paquin (Rogue) is prettier in "Fly Away Home" than here. Patrick Stewart (Professor Xavier) is fit for the role. Kid Omega was a good guy in X-Men Evolution T.V. series.
