Twin Genes

Our family has a dominant twin gene pool.

There are two set of twins from my dad-side. One set is first cousins to my dad, himself. They are identical female twins – Ate Ging and Ate Ning. Another set is my own first cousins, Akemi and Akilyn. Again, they are identical female twins.

On the other hand, there is a set of twins from my mom-side. They are my first cousins who are fraternal male twins, Ace and Leo.

I’ve always carried this thought (and perhaps could be backed up by genetic calculations) that I have a HUGE chance of “producing” the latest set of twins for the family. That’s until my sister who’s younger by a year gave birth (prematurely) three years ago to fraternal female twins.

Liz and Lei… who I’ve fondly called the Wonder Twins (since their survival from being born two (or was it three?) months earlier and remain healthy and bright kids are a God-given wonder to all of us… especially for the newly Lola-Mommy, my mother).

Wonder Twins - a couple of months old

Now, as opportunities come and everything falls into place well for her family, it came to a point that they have to move far away. Today, they just flew to Sydney… for good. As much as how we all wanted to see the twins grow, to guide and nurture them to acquire a true Espiritu’s compassion and moral character, Sydney is a more promising place for them to stay.

But I’ll sure going to miss them badly.

I’ve never considered living anywhere but here no matter how opportunities have presented themselves, but I think my sister migrating to Sydney just heralds the idea that the rest of the family should also consider settling in Australia someday.

Now, I’m compelled to drop the idea of staying here in the country forever and start thinking of how I can haul the family there. It isn’t that hard but it won’t be really easy either. By just thinking that I’ll be going home later and know that there won’t be any cheering and snickering kiddos waiting for me at home shouting “Ninooooong!” and grabbing my hand to “bless” (mano) is a very very withdrawal-taunting experience that I’d rather summon the tropa and hit the pub to drown the fact away with whatever concoction I could take.

Bonus na lang that I’ll probably be able to fly to Sydney again early next year if God wills it for the office to reconsider sending me there for work. That’s of course after I declined the supposed trip last month. So I don’t really stake high hopes there at this moment.

Anyway, the dad made a “surprise” invite for a family night-out last Saturday and we really made good use of the quality time. I say, that day alone made up for a whole slew of days that I’m not home spending time with the twins being off on my usual plethora of lakwatsa moments instead.

Everything we did… every moment… every single time we are together was charged into my memories and I can only hope the twins too have done just the same. Wag niyo ko kalimutan!

Until we next meet, Wonder Twins! Tito Ninong loves you always!
