Next Stop for the Riderman

A couple of hours more and we'll finally push through with the Ilocos roadtrip. I'm as excited as a pigtailed girl waiting for her prom date.

This'L only be my third time on the region. And although we literally scoured the country's Regions 1, 3, and C.A.R. on my first two trips on the Northern lands, I'll be with a new set of tropa this time so there's still an air of "new-ness" in it. Besides, a 14 to 15 hour trip is sooo not worth it with the wrong companions.

Hopefully, I can get to see new sites and meet new people along the way as we'll gonna be riding along the casts and crew of Karlo's indie movie. Ayun din, I wish that Mister Riderman's film will be a success. I've always wanted to have a film I can call MY own. He beat me to it.

Well, I'm not working for that dream anyway. At least, not YET. That's also one reason why I've opted to join - to check out and at least learn something about the craft of filming. We'll see in the future where would this fantasy go.

For now, I pray that we'll have a safe trip. Till the next stop!

Where Dreams Do Come True

Rock Band rocks!

Last Saturday, the boyz were in tambay mode until 5 in the morning just playing Rock Band in Xbox 360 and it really makes time fly like a jetfighter in mach 1! The last time I remembered checking for the time earlier that night (or morning) it was only around 1AM then what seemed just after a couple of songs, it was already 4AM. Grabe, ganun ka-aliw.

I spent more playing on the drums. Frustration ko kasi 'to since my hand-foot coordination sucks. Back when I was still on a real band, I always make it a point to sit down on the drumset and hit some rolls while the rest of the band was still busy setting up. Pero hindi pa din ako matuto-tuto. Sa Rock Band, aliw mag drums kahit ambulok ko pa din pag dating sa part na may pedals (bass drum). Kahit man lang sa laruan e nakapag drums ako na may kasabay na musical piece.

Anyway, we swapped roles from drums, to both guitars (leads and bass), to the mic. Astig yung mic part. In short, pang lasing. Haha!

I can imagine using this as a more entertaining substitute to the typical videoke-mic. Mas madami ang may ginagawa and promotes team-play. Only problem is the song limitation. Sabi nga ni Kei... hindi ito Pop Band or New Wave Band... there's a reason why it's called "Rock Band". Hehe. Onga naman. Nagtaka lang ako kung bakit may "Roam" by the B52's (80's chick flick song). Pero oo pinag-tripan namin syang tugtugin.

Anyway, as it is, most of the songs are really of the rock genre (bands such as Disturbed, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple) so kumbaga may target niche pa yung game. But I can see it catering to other genres in the future. Songs are downloadable from the web so there's a plethora of songs to choose from. That's if you have the original game and console. They block web updates from those who use custom and pirated stuffs. Dapat lang!

Ongapala, we suck most of the time kaya pangalan muna namin "Suck Band".

Space Hulk by GW

Before that night, we were at our same ol' tambayan in Virramall. Geek mode muna as Sandico brought a classic 1989 board game "Space Hulk" by Games Workshop. We just played it until store closing. Before heading to Kei's place, bumili muna kami ng chicha... a whole grilled chikken and 2 chunks of liempo. Heart stopper.

On the next day (despite my two-hour sleep), I was still able to barely drag myself to Tomas Morato to meetup with the airsoft team (Screaming BB's and People's Park). Surprise guest appearance si Storm na matagal na naming hindi nakalaro. May ipapa-blind date daw sa akin na tropa nyang looking for a "serious BF". Hehe... touched ako, kasi ako ang naisip nyang "serious BF" material. Haha.

L-R: Jan Liit, Kornpleks, Fine Young Cannibal, Spiderman

SBB Attendance: Korn, Storm, Jeng, Jorge, Super Inggo, Chewy, Garrick Astley, Obi, Topher, Jan Liit, Hans, Omeng, Jubay Bomber

Games were at San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. Actually isang "game" lang for me since I slept on the first round of games. Di ko na kaya yung antok after namin kumain (baboy reflex). Umuulan ulan pa so mas malakas ang tawag ng Nyu-Nyu Land (juan tamad reflex). Games were hosted by the local airsoft team, SJAG. Umuwi din kami agad dahil naging consistent yung bagsak ng ulan na parang hindi na nya trip tumigil.

Dinner na lang at Bagoong Club Resto near Morato. Panalo ang mga pagkain. Sakto lang for its price tag.

Naka-uwi ako ng maaga, after namin tumambay ng sobrang saglit sa Shak. Nakapaglaro pa kami ng matagal ng mga kambal.

The Wonder Twins... Liz and Lei (or vice versa)

Debut Album of Our Band

Ninenok ko ito kay Koya Larr dahil alas otso na at nasa opisina pa din ako. Oo, gento ako ka-flip kapag inabutan ako ng buwan sa trabaho. Pero ang kulet nitong pampalipas-oras. Pramis, peksman krosmayhart!

The link opens in new window.

Hmm... siguro ang carrier single namin dito ay "Bush is Antichrist". Haha! Naiskandalo ako nung lumabas yung website eh. It's a hate blog against the President. Sakto, yan ang gagawing election jingle ni Obama. Tapos #1 agad sa US Hit Charts, first week pa lang! Haha.

Impress and Express

We just finished the first half of the Business Writing Workshop by Brainworks Asia. It's funny how some common phrases that we already perceived as canon grammar are actually technically incorrect. Phrases like "fill up" should be "fill out" and a "free gift" is obviously just a "gift" as an "ATM machine" is redundant since it already means Automated Teller MACHINE. But we often see and might have used them ourselves regularly.

I've written articles and literatures for publications and I've been into creative writing for God-knows how long already. With it, I'm the type who writes more to impress in addition to just express something. Formal writing for me is like a censorship. It restricts freedom in composition and artistry in wordplay.

As such, I don't feel any comfortable writing in a business tone just as how I feel fidgety and absurd wearing long-sleeve polo shirts at work.

This workshop has a lot to teach me; if not as much as to my grammatical usage but in inculcating in my mind that in a business environment, a concisely structured statement will win a Carlos Palanca Award over a creative fiction.

Funky.

Roads to Darling Harbour

I started writing this short story almost half a year ago already. I intended it to be a writing practice for me, to just keep the creative juice flowing and the skills in check, so there's really no reason to rush.

My original plan was to play around the factual idea that everytime I walk around the City, I know there'll be a point that iL end up in Darling Harbour unconsciously. Odd but true. However, along the course of writing, I started throwing in things, people, places, and other odd stuffs that in one way or another have been memorable to me.

I have to be clear though that the story is fictional and in no way it has actually happened to me. Hindi pa ako gento katanga. Haha!

I enjoyed writing it! Time to dive in for another one.

Roads to Darling Harbour
by O.B. Concepcion
19/2/08

It was a chilling July winter in the suburb of Wollstonecraft and gusts of wind coming from the harbour shores only made the coldness worse. At least that was the case for a foreigner like me, who hailed from the tropics and has never felt winter until that day I was sent in Australia for a business trip.

“At least, it doesn’t snow here in Sydney,” my Kiwi colleague would always tell me.

That sounded quite reassuring, really. Although the telltale signs of my body hairs standing off of my skin and my teeth gritting involuntarily indicated otherwise. I was even beginning to wonder if the thermal jumper I’ve worn everyday could alleviate any cold at all. It was at least warmer in Sydney, where I went for work, so I just have to walk… no… stride from my flat to the City-ward train and I would feel a bit better for the rest of the day.

This particular day was uncannily different.

The Aussies would describe it as “flat out, like a lizard drinking” – an exaggeratedly busy day. And I would have stayed longer – even longer than what was usually “longer” for me – in the office, if I haven’t realized that I was missing my flat’s key! Hoping to get ahold of the flat keeper and wishing the old bloke got a duplicate, I bundied out of work and rushed into Sydney’s evening traffic, taking the only route I knew heading back to Wollstonecraft.

But it did not lead me anywhere close. I have a mental note of the names of streets and images of familiar turns and landmarks along the way and made sure – everyday! - that I religiously followed these indicators back to my flat. That day, for reasons that totally escaped me, I was led to a downtown pedestrian precinct overlooking a contemporary marina instead. The place made me feel uneasy (or was it the increasing chill?). The concrete pavements toward the marina complex were lined up with lampposts that cast off a pale yellowish hue. Along with the dots of light from the urban skyline across the inlet, the place exuded a hauntingly romantic appeal. I suddenly missed my home back in the tropics.

I stirred myself out of reverie. I have a flat keeper to catch and he often retires early to bed each night. So, not bothering to enter the marina, I turned around and retraced my way back to the last “indicator” that I remembered seeing, briefly noting an arrow-shaped billboard hanging on a fence that pointed back to where I just came from. It read “Darling Harbour”.

Half-walking, half-jogging, I tried my best to navigate from the bustling city, hopping from busses to busses with only a series of bus numbers and corresponding schedules stored in the “Notepad” application of my mobile phone as guide. In what was supposed to be my last stop, I got off at a well lit avenue with lots – well, hoardes! – of people walking to and fro; most of them, as apparent from their sleek business coats, has just came off their offices too. I threw myself into the fray and squeezed myself through the tight pack of pedestrians who were mostly hurrying themselves home.

I never heard that rush hours in Wollstonecraft could get this… this… bloody, I thought to myself with a shrug.

I looked around and noticed a huge banner on top of a petrol station on the other side of the road. It was a tourism advertisement for a skiing trip to the Snowy Mountains and its “breathtaking views of Mount Kosciusko, Australia’s tallest peak”. An odd feeling immediately took over me before I realized that I was completely unfamiliar with this part of the suburb.

“I think I’m lost.”

I never realized I’ve spoken my thoughts aloud until a wiry bloke in a backcombed hairdo overheard me and said, “Excuse me?”

He looked approachable enough so I thought better to ask if he happened to know the directions to the street where my flat was in which he immediately (and confidently) answered, “Try Wollstonecraft, mate. Lob in and I’m sure your street’s in there.”

“In Wollstonecraft?” I reiterated with a wrinkled forehead.

The guy nodded then headed his way, probably not hearing the “thanks” I mumbled. Then, it fell into place. I am not in Wollstonecraft. It was immediately confirmed when I asked a random passer-by that indeed I was nowhere near my place and in fact, I was still in the City!

Having lost a hell lot in my life, I knew better than to panic. I edged my way to a less crowded corner (without wearing an “I AM LOST” look in my face) and carefully assessed the surrounding. I should have been more composed but Fate just has to make things more complicated. I pocketed a hand and discovered that my bus ticket was also missing! Asking around for directions, I finally was able to walk my way to a part of the City that was more familiar to me. From there, I wandered around interlaced side streets until I was able to reach the district’s main highway. The walk was fairly winding but I was used to it. It was just that my stomach was starting to grumble in protest.

All thoughts of stopping for dinner was abruptly cut short when I arrived at a small connecting bridge way. However, it was not the paved bridge’s simplistic engineering or the ornate bushes around it that caught my attention. It was the familiar façade of a romantic skyline in the background of a peaceful inlet. It was Darling Harbour… again. Crossing the bridge way would lead me to a commercial arcade lined with souvenir shops and convenient stores. Further down towards the marina was the path lined with lampposts.

It was almost tempting to get in and rest for a while but with a day as bonkers as I had, I’d rather see the night over as quickly as I could. So without even proceeding past the bridge way, I turned back and carefully picked out the more recognizable roads.

I later ended up on the subway station of a busy hub in George Avenue. Usually, I do not take train rides during rush hours. They were cramped and crowded to the doors. That night, it was way past rush hour and people were thinning out. Most were already in their homes, warm and full to the guts. I busied myself from that envying thought by looking at a huge tarp by the other side of the waiting platform advertising “an adventurous bushwalking in the majestic Blue Mountains of West Sydney”. It was abruptly blocked off from my view when the northbound train cut through. It was time to board.

A couple of minutes later, I get off a station where a huge signage sat by an overhang. It read “Wollstonecraft”. How I wished I could see the smile on my face right at that moment! I quickly hop out into an all-too-familiar thoroughfare. It might be too late to catch up with the flat keeper but it pays to give a chance so I trotted my way home, picking turns and side streets I regularly saw everyday. Oddly, the streets suddenly kept on getting more unfamiliar as I went on my way. It was as if a whole slew of new houses were built that day on this side of the scrub just to confuse me!

Anxiety turned into despair. Trot turned into a sprint. I already barely could recall the places I was seeing around me and even lost my train ticket in the process. I whinged to myself, cursing the state I was in. After what seemed to be a few minutes later, I stopped… resigned to the fact that I was, again, lost. Noticing that that part of Wollstonecraft was a bit busier than most parts of the suburb did not abate the churning inside my gut. Something was surely amiss. I tried to be nonchalant about it but when I saw this Chinese guy closing a lolly store several blocks away, I immediately knew where I was and I have every bloody reason to freak out. Definitely, I was still not in Wollstonecraft!

I’ve crossed that same avenue just hours ago when that guy was still out offering free sweets to by passers. Right away, I hurried towards an adjacent corner to confirm what I already knew. On a fence was the arrow-shaped “Darling Harbour” billboard pointer that I saw earlier that night. I was still in the City and worse, back in Darling Harbour. From that vantage, I can already see in the distance the sparkling reflection of the evening skyline on the dockside inlet.

A flittering banner on the walls of a nearby chemist shop showed pictures of Cottage Point and its “enjoyable fishing amenities” but the word “fish” struck me most… made me crave. It was already several hours past my usual dinner time. As much as I wanted to think about anything other than going home, the bizarre fact that I could not even find my way back was enough not to worry about my already complaining stomach.

Snakey and hungry and whacked, my stubbornness got the better of me and just to plainly vent everything out, I ran as fast as I could. With no place in particular to go, I only wanted to flee away from the general direction of Darling Harbour… away from hunger and the biting cold, away from exhaustion and confusion. On and on and on, until I finally could not; and so, I stopped.

Alas, my stomach is wanting and I’m hungry.

Alas, I can barely move my legs and they’re still freezing some more.

Alas, I’m too tired and there is no sign that I can rest anytime soon.

Alas, it’s hard to think logically anymore and I am still lost.

I looked up, panting. I’ve ran several hundred metres already but the sight of the surroundings drained me of whatever was left of my energy. A tanned man in green and white hoodie might have noticed the dispirited look in my face as he passed by. I recalled him asking worriedly, “You ol’right, mate?” I knew I baffled – might have even scared – the bloke because I did not pay any attention.

Instead, I just slumped into a concrete slope and stared past the bridge way in front of me and into the glinting reflections on the calm water from afar. Even closer were the lined up lampposts, there as witnesses to things that were still unexplained as if taunting me with every flicker of their pale glow. The now-closed convenient stores and arcade centres; the trickle of people wandering around the docks… on that day alone, I’ve been well familiarized with the place already.

Darling Harbour.

Relinquishing to the fact that Fate put the mockers on me and inculcating in me that all roads lead to Darling Harbour, I just let it be. That and the fact that I was sure I’d never get to the flat keeper in time and I was hungry and cold and dead tired anyway, I just let it be.

I slogged into the marina for the first time that night and having been freed from immediate worries – maybe aside from the probability that I would be sleeping on the dark, cold corners of that place soon – I got to enjoy the sceneries and the inherent relaxing nature of the place. I stood by the edge of the wooden docks, fixing on the immediate horizon. Tired from the day’s ratty incidents to even think about anything, I just cleared my mind and closed my eyes and felt the sea breeze gently lapping around me albeit chilling. What seemed earlier as despair became serenity, became bliss. I savoured every minute of carefreeness and thought, so this is how it feels to be… free?

And when finally I opened my eyes after what seemed to be eternity, right there in front of me was a wrap of grilled jumbuck meat over a thick and neatly folded parka. Jutting right out of the parka’s woolen hood was a train ticket for Wollstonecraft, a bus ticket good for a single ride and to top it all… my flat’s key.

Life is a Balancing Act

Wednesday - SA Movie Premier Turnover
Bacolod Chicken Inasal
Turnover for the SA Movie Premier. Guys from SE13 were also there as well as their Sheps.

SE14 Attendance: Me, Emz, K, Ivan, Joiner Lor, Joiner Erl, Kia, Inday Eesai, Marcoes P and M, Sheps Ali Mike Tish, Jan the Man, Cleo, Philip, Drew, Nino, may nakalimutan ba?

I'll be tagging along with Emz as Publications Head. Charles was the one who oriented us about the nitty-gritty. Tambay in the place until midnight with Shep Ali, Laurie, and Erl just to pass the night.

After that, I rushed to Istarbuko-Adriatico in Malate to meet Pinsan Idol and Techy Friend. Tambay ulit. Olats, I was aching to have that limited-ed tumbler she have. Kaso bago pa daw ilabas for sale, nauubos na sa dami ng reservations. Sabi ng barista kong tropa, alamin ko daw yung tawag dun tapos iiskoran nya daw ako. It looks like a regular iced grande cup (yung transparent na plastic cup) kaso tumbler siya so matigas yung plastic tapos may built-in na locked-on straw.

Argh.

Thursday - "The Dark Knight" Movie Premier
Greenbelt Tres
Syempre nauna sa premier ng movie yung mga excited na fans... ako, si Jan, at si Marco P. That day, I changed an earring to a Batman one. Tapos naka shirt ako na may Bat symbol.

the batshirt, batwine, and batwaiter (on the background)

SE14 Attendance: Me, Jan the Man, Fellowship Head (? haha) Marco P., Marco M., Raissa, Kia, Kat, Ivan, Sheps Ali and Mike, Drew, sino pa ba?

Nakita namin si Del (SE13) with his workmates. Same cinema din. There was this Globe premier events guy na namimigay na ng libreng tickets with free popcorns and drinks to boot. Hindi kasi dumating yung ibang clients nila so sayang yung mga seats. Kinuha na lang namin number nya for future premieres (The Mummy!).

the bat-earring, batbeard, and batcustomer (on the background)

Friday - VMS and QA Team Night Out
Coronado Lanes, Starmall
Buong 17th floor sumama. Dinner muna sa Teriyaki Boy then bowling afterwards.

We were grouped into four five-member teams and after two rounds of ball-tossing, we won at 187.4 combined average points. Kaching! Papa-pizza na lang namin dito sa office yung cash prize bukas.

Astig ng scores ko... 154 and 137 for the 1st and 2nd games, respectively. And the last time I played bowling was two years ago already! This was where I grabbed "Best Male Bowler 2006" for having the highest overall scores after a tourney league (but our team din't win the top slot back then). What's cool is that the talent is innate. I never bowl that much or even show much interest for the sports but I just happen to sally in some good throws and has some good aptitude with it.

Game 1: Strike (19) / (28) / Strike (56) / Strike (75) / Spare (93) / (102) / Strike (120) / (128) / (137) / Strike (154) - 154 points
Game 2: (9) / Spare (27) / Spare (44) / Spare (57) / (65) / Strike (84) / (93) / (101) / Strike (121) / Spare (137) - 137 points

Di ba ang mga otistik may special talent bawat isa? Yung hindi na kelangan i-develop pero meron na agad sila. Baka bowling yung sa akin. Haha!

I went to da Shak afterwards.

an avenue of food stalls, how can you go wrong by NOT going there... yub yub!

Uh well. Class dismissed at 2AM.

Saturday - "Perfect Storm"
Manila Yacht Club
Sailing aboard the 40-footer "Challenge" at the Manila Yacht Club.

"Challenge" Crew Attendance: Martin, Waway, Carlo, Paul, Devlin, Kellie, Pat, Mikey, Gelo, Mang Pi, Vince, Del, Lou, Owen, sino pa ba?

the kamote crew version 2, waiting for the race

The original crew of "Challenge" is back and it's the first time I saw how 14 big guys fit on the 40-footer. I was designated to be with Master Carlo on the pit, teaching me how the piano works and where each sheets are connected. It was a pretty interesting post and I'm looking forward to learn more about it.

Nadagdagan ang Kamote Crew Version 2 (inside term sa mga aspiring crew... nagsimula noong Independence Day Regatta 08) in the form of Attorney Owen. Since he's almost Gelo's size (think triple X shirts haha peace!), pwede siya pang Mastman.

Ang malupet, biglang umulan ng malakas. Of course, we don't really mind being drenched and all. I remember the first time I sailed in "Challenge" it rained hard too. Ang problema, kumikidlat na! So us and "Jo de Ros" (opposing yacht) called the race off. Tumambay na lang kami sa club for some pansit (traditional food daw) and booze.

Inuman session continuation at Dencio's-Harbour View. Konti lang ininom ko, sabay nag kape na ko dun habang lumalaklak sila. (senti mode) Istarbuko-Harbour View still holds a place in my heart kasi (/senti mode). And also, adik na adik ako sa dark mocha ngayon. Ang malupit, sabi ng tropa kong barista hanggang this week na lang siya tapos uubusin na lang yung ingredients phase out na. Olats. Kaya habang meron pa, kape ako ng kape. Anlapot na siguro ng dugo ko.

the senti pic sa Istarbuko Harbour View. tae to, nakaka miss

We went our ways around 11PM but me and the bozz Gelo (still aching to wander), went to our tambayan, Da Shak, in Kamias. South to North. Hehe. Class dismissed at 1AM.

Sunday - "Return of the Korn"
Camp Pugad Lawin, La Mesa Eco Park
Regular airsoft games with the Screaming BB's.

SBB Attendance: Jubay, Garrlolo, Obi Doo, Jeng, Inggo, Jorge, Hansy, Rommel, Lloyd, Korn, Sir Lee, Sir Gem, and one other People Parker

Korn is back in the game. But just like Jubay Bomber, he's also converted to the DSLR-side of the Force! Naka camera na silang lahat! Furthering my envy to start the hobby. Argh. Sir Gem and Lee even cut their games short as they have to rush back in their Morato studio for a pictorial. Must resist. I have lots of hobbies already and photography had been a very old frustration... since highschool pa!

It was a nice day to game albeit humid and damn hot. Yun pala uulan ng malakas sa hapon. Some of us continued playing and we don't really mind gaming in the rain but the food (lots!) kicked in on me and I felt a bit sluggish already. Naka apat na games lang ako that day.

Dinner at Nato's-Kamuning afterwards then tambay sa Shak.

Korn, post the pics na!

Why So Serious?

Watched the "The Dark Knight" premier with the SE14 people last night.

The Dark Knight
Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert! Spoiler Alert!

The Spoiler:
Organized crime still plagues the city of Gotham. A triumvirate is formed between the police (Lt. Gordon), the law (District Attorney Dent), and Batman to spearhead the rounding up of criminal gangs in the city. Enter the psycho villain, Joker. While the streets of Gotham are being swept of malfeasance, the Joker consolidates his own mob and created havoc and confusion among the populace.

The trio deviced a plan and successfully captured the "clown" but a series of devious schemes turned the table against the good guys. Joker escapes and continues his terror. With several key persons dead along his wake, one of the most critical loss is Rachel Dawes, Harvey Dent's girl. This, and Harvey's nasty facial injury, culminates his jump to the dark side as the coin-flipping villain, Two Face.

Two Face hunts the then promoted Commissioner Gordon for revenge while the Joker rigged another terror plot. Batman, with the help of a new technology patterned after a concept by Wayne Enterprise's CEO, captures the Joker in record time and thwarts Dent's reprisal.

In the end, we will see scenes of the city's "liberation" from its dependence to Batman. But c'mon, we all know that the Bat will be back for God-knows how many more sequels. I look forward to that.

The Opinion:
I was in awe since the start of the film and not just because I look up to Batman. Bias aside, the movie is a masterpiece worthy of being elevated to timelessness.

...on the casts,
Christian Bale further seeps into the role of the Bat, hands down. As much as I would want to cling to the illusion that Michael Keaton has the best Batman portrayal, rectitude tells that it has to be Christian Bale now. Aaron Eckhart (Harvey Dent) did very well and convincing both as a good guy and a bad guy. It reminds me of the lead roles in "Face Off". Gary Oldman is just right as a younger Commissioner Gordon who is still in his prime as a hands-on crime fighter (most would remember him as the aged "office cop" from the comics). Morgan Freeman (CEO Lucius Fox) has short appearances in the film but I dig the coldness he exhibited. It's just fit for the role's stature. Michael Caine (Alfred the Butler) is an auto-include. The Alfred Pennyworth role just screams his name and I can't imagine any other candidates in his place that will give justice to it.

I have some reservations for Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes), though. The chemistry between her and Harvey Dent no matter how their scenes are expertly developed in terms of the script and exposure is just mediocre. I might attribute this to the brilliance of the rest of the casts who performed above expectation. Leaving the best for last, I'd want to outright stand and applause after the screening for the late Heath Ledger for a very very terrific performance (magmumuka nga lang akong tanga). Damn, that's a very radical portrayal of the Joker but it's one that I'd put my money on! One can really feel the psychosis albeit twisted genius behind the clown because of Ledger's acting. I say, it was a great redemption from the Brokeback image and a dramatic conclusion to his career. Salute!

...on the story,
Phasing is good. It's chock-full of action cuts and what's best is that they were able to fuse this with a not-so-plain storyline. I was anticipating that the plot would be just the basic "good versus evil" formula but there were twists in the film that proved me wrong. One thing to take note is the exposure laid for the Joker character. It was developed brilliantly through out the story and with help from Ledger's exceptional performance, I can go as far as saying this should be a "Joker" movie and not a Batman one... or perhaps a "Batman AND Joker" film, at the most.

I've always been a fan of the more comic-ish Batman flicks (Tim Burton's "Batman" films) since it stick with the dark Gothic theme of the cape crusader but "Dark Knight" makes me a believer of the realism version. This one is dark enough while proving that it can still be close to reality. Of course, there are obvious exaggerations of factual circumstances but nothing that din't help to make a terrific progress on the storyline.

The "Dark Knight" Batman is very human in terms of real-life predicaments and concerns. He was not portrayed as the typical carefree "I-kill-you-all" hero. I just hate it though when he do his Inday Garutay baritone to cover up his real voice. I would want to laugh my arse off in this scene where he was arguing with Commissioner Gordon. He could barely raise his voice as much as the scene requires it since he has to maintain the Inday Garutay tone. Bwehehe!

...on the Bat-gears,
I like the mobility that the new batsuit gives the wearer. By looking at how the fight scenes are done, you'll have an idea that the costume does not impede the actor to do realistic combat. One thing I'm a bit off is the mask itself. There were angles that it's just too chubby on the jaws that he looks more like an owl sans the pointy ears than a bat. It's not sleek enough but maybe it's just me.

As always, the Hummer-like batmobile is cool but the comic dude in me will not pick it over the classic long jet-black Corvette-like batmobile. There's also the batpod (bike). Great design, I say. Riders will love it and its uber-huge wheels. I want one.

...on everything else,
Visuals are good. Some CG work, great. I like this part when they blew a hospital down. It seems unnecessary but the overall impact of a huge building blowing into pieces amidst a fear-stricken population adds up to the dramatic effect.

The film is long at 2 hours and a half but it din't bore me and in fact everything seems to have just gone briefly. It'll make you wanting for more. I've been reading reviews on the web (finally, I have the luxury to do it since I've already watched the film... I was aching to read around since yesterday!) and it was the same sentiment all over. We shout part 3!!!

I can't think of capping my review by talking about Batman alone. "The Dark Knight" put Joker in a whole new iconic status of his own. You'd watch this not only for the cape crusader but the brilliance behind the clown's portrayal.

10 out of 10!

PS: Pay extra attention when Joker says he'll gonna make the pencil disappear! Hahaha! Why so serious?!

The Gas Chamber Experience

We finally were able to push through with the band's jam session yesterday at Makati Cinema Square and though our execution was mediocre, I'm sure that the fact that the place is crap tells a lot about what happened.

Rant follows.

1. Soooobrang init sa loob.
- Nagbutil butil ang pawis namin sa pagtugtog. Gusto ko sana mag hubad pero kakapit ang pawis ko sa bass guitar... and that a far window was open to public. Not that iL mind it much being watched. Mas maangas nga topless... sans the dreaded BILBIL! Haha.

2. Olats ang instruments.
- The amps have been a pain. Talo sa feedback at noise reduction. Yung bass guitar nila ansakit sa kamay. Sobrang kapal ng kalawang sa #4 and #2 strings, that I still can't feel a fingertip until now! Peksman. And since I'm a thumb player as opposed to most traditional bass players, kinalyo yung hinlalaki ko. I can't even play my rifts well. Kasi imbes na mag slide ako or hammer, the uber thick rust muted the strings enough not to permit such techniques! Ok pa din naman daw ang kinalabasan sabi ni Mike. Carry.

the bass guitar that hurt me

3. Pangit ang acoustics ng room.
- Walang noise reduction yung room.

4. Luma na yung mga gamit.
- The mic was taped on the stand. Drums was next to dilapidated. Amps were functioning below standard.

our side (me & mike)

We did enjoy though. Simply because we were able to play again outside our own separate bands and genres. Parang bata ulit kaming apat na starting to babystep our way into forming a band. Exciting kasi bumuo ng banda in contrast to playing in a band where you've been into for a long time na. Andyang pinag-uusapan ulit kung ano yung mga tutugtugin tsaka paano ang approach... basically, brainstorming ideas.

In short, napag tiisan na yung lugar. But for sure, di na kami babalik dun. We've been considering other venues already. We only stayed for an hour playing renders of "Tatsulok" by Bamboo, "High" by the Speaks, and Kamikaze's "Narda". Wala pa kaming band name but after Arnie jokingly asked when are we going to rent the "Gas Chamber" again (pertaining to the MCS music room), we were thinking "Gas Chamber Experience" is a catchy name.

their side (johann & arnie)

I'll buy my own bass guitar soon but a friend who was a bassist for a defunct show-band told me to borrow his bass guitar first so just I could sample the brand. We'll see.

The band: Johann on the mic, Arnie on strings, Obi on thicker strings, and Mike on drumsticks. We're looking to fill the other guitarist slot.

*****

Commercial: I just came in from an applicant's technical interview. She's soooo cute. But soooo unavailable too! Married. Argh. All the nice ladies in the world were either taken or misogamist. Kakapanood ng "Sex in the City" or "Desperate Housewives" siguro, hahaha!

I guess her husband's name is Jack... short for, Jackpot. Hahaha. Muntik ko nang itanong... "may younger sister ka?" (she's older than me) o kaya naman, "alam mo ba yung kasabihang 'Mas madaling mahuli ang nakataling manok?". Nyahaha!

Wag ganun. Joke lang ha.

Back to work!

Kidnappers for A Day

It was cool to be a bandit for a while and earn by just goofing all day.

Shak Attendance: Hairy Critter, Jakob the Pure, F-Tits, Riderman, Little Jan, Jumping Johnny, Jep, Hervi, Obi Doo, Pork, Kuneho

The boyz of da Shak were contracted by Channel 2 to play as Abu Sayyaf members who kidnapped the group of reporter, Ces Drilon, for a reenactment shoot. So Arvs went into contacting some of the boyz who could fit into the role. Sakto, I've been too lazy to shave my Abe Lincoln-ish beard last week.

Our set was shot at the La Mesa Eco Center and it was amazing to finally be able to see a film production at work. Everything was set up efficiently quick! The production crew worked like they have symbiotic presence of mind... kapag kailangan ng ilaw or props, the director just needed saying it and naka setup na agad lahat in an eye-blink. How much more if it was for a big movie, di ba? Ang galing! In short, I was not much fascinated by the story we acted out but more into how the short flick was produced. Ganun pala yun. Astig.

Anyway, the director and the rest of the crew were very nice. We were just goofing around the whole day and having fun while we shoot the whole thing. Jep told me it was not always like that in a shooting. So baka nga mabait lang talaga yung direktor at crew na nakasama namin. Angas. Good job.

We also had the perk (if it is) of knowing some of the real story behind the kidnapping and how the ordeal went through. And what's sooo cool was that Che (the lady who played Ces) actually wore the clothes that Miss Drilon have worn when she was kidnapped... clothes, jeans, and even her muddied shoes! Astig.

Aside from Karlo who played as one of the cameraman and Mayor Fred who's just too white to look like a bandit, the rest of us had our own shares of terrorist "moments" in the clip. It was funny to see da boyz in their most kontrabida faces that I could barely restrain my sorry arse to laugh, hehe. Umulan that day, kaya may idle time na nagkukulitan lang kami which is just usual when two or more Shak boyz congregate. Kaya hindi ko ma-imagine na despite the jovial air, nakapag focus pa din si Che to play her part well lalo na dun sa more serious parts where she has to look tormented. Good job.

The documentary will be shown in Channel 2 on Sunday, right after "Bandila". I think.

*****

While writing this I'm getting in the mood to go on a political rant. Pero sa ibang araw na lang... magtutunog AM radio na naman blog ko. Hahaha!

Rinda Rinda Rinda

The Eiga Sai 2008 (Japanese Film Festival) opened last Tuesday and it'L run until July 13 and 26 to 27 in the Shangri-La Plaza. They will feature several contemporary Japanese films in English subtitles. Among the films to be screened, the 2005 award-winning movie "Linda Linda Linda" appealed to me after a friend recommended that it's a must-watch.

I'm not particularly into J-films but I've always been curious with how other cultures attack the art of their films so I'm sooo interested on getting to see even at least one of the movies lined up (sana nga "Linda Linda Linda").

Samahan nyo koooow!!!

Not Another Zombie Flick

Me being ME, I made sleeping 2 to 3 in the morning and going to work the next day a typical habit. This past week was among the worst.

Tuesday (bedtime - 3AM)
Greenbelt / Manila Pen
Dinner with JB and some present and ex-colleagues. The former was an HR in our Sydney office until she moved to London for good and now she's back here in Manila for business errands.

Inuman sa Greenbelt afterwards.

Wednesday (bedtime - 2:30AM)
Las Piñas
Wala munang basketball for me.

Had a meeting with the SE14 class regarding upcoming events. I'm excited about the Bacolod trip above everything.

Videoke-time followed. I got to see SE people sing! Galing ni Shep Tish and Gelyn! Woot. Pat-in-the-back-extra-hard! :)

thanks, fans. i'm not where i am right now without you guys. haha.

And since dito lang ako sa mga taong ito makakatanggi uminom and they'L understand, I only grogged down a bottle of Saint Mike's Light Barley. I can see a more abundant alcoholic binge in the coming days. So I regulate while I can!

Thursday (bedtime - 3:30AM)
Greenbelt / Manila Pen
Part 2 of JB's night outing.

This time she wanted the night to be a bit longer! Four cocktails down the drain in Absinth after a very very terrific dinner at John and Yoko's (Greenbelt 5). I always have to reiterate how divine their shrimp-mango pizza tastes! Totally wicked for its price.

What surprised me was the fact that I din't feel groggy after downing much of the red concoction (and I'm not the liquor-type to boot!). It must be the great food in J&Y's! It JUST should be it. Haha.

sinong lasing ha? may lasing bang nakangiti?!!

Friday (bedtime - 4:00AM)
Greenhills / Chinese resto, Pasig / Tita's Condo, Roxas Blvd. / Pan Pacific Casino, Malate
Off to Greenhills with Bozz Gelo (cranky and all with 6 bottles of barley inside his belly) to meet Jubay to submit documents for our airsoft guns. Jubay and Tina treated us for dinner (the wife was promoted) at a Chinese resto (Jade's?) in Pasig.

After filling out the papers, I met Tita 9 and Idol Pinsan in Malate. Major hangout with Idol at Istarbuko-Adriatico. Nakaka-miss dito!!! Just a year ago, we've always been here. Parang bahay lang. Tambay lang with Idol and Pouty. Waaah, nakaka-miss ka Ly!

peborit istarbuko-adriatico pic ko with Iday/Pouty/Ly/Batgirl/High Mentenans.
extra pa si Idol! muntik pa ko maputol!
oo na, Aina... mushy na kung mushy! Haha!

After much catching up, we headed to their condo so I could start working on her new PC. But the power source acted up (with sparks and smoke!) so it'L have to wait until the next morning.

Lamentation.

Saturday (bedtime - 3:00AM)
Tita's Condo, Roxas Blvd. / Manila Yacht Club / St. James the Great Parish, Alabang / Laiya, BF Homes / Manong's, Alabang
Early in the morning, I have to rush back at Tita 9's place and was able to fix the PC in record time.

Walked - no, strode! - to the MYC just in time to catch Gelo and Lou. Del followed soon with news from the Outreach (that I missed because of the PC works... lamentation!). Point-to-point race against "Jo de Ros" and another yacht ensued next. Ron was kind enough to have the boat stay longer in the waters so they could to teach us more stuffs about sailing. Truly, it has been very very educational!

malayo ang tingin, wala namang tinitignan

After sailing, me, Lou, and Del had some sausage moments in BF for dinner and TBC (two-bottles club) while waiting for the time to tick.

We arrived at the St. James MPH just in time for the PM. It was awesome how I was half-asleep (total wastage!) during the sharings but when the PM started, I din't feel sleepy at all. It was as if God, Himself, was prodding me with that extra energy to spend in worship. It felt good. Ang galing.

Gathering at Manong's followed next. I was running on sugar and caffeine just to keep me awake and sane! I had leche flan, buko pandan, sago gulaman, and brewed coffee. I missed the class. Sayang, hindi lahat pumunta. Thanks Pam and Del for the hitch!

Sunday (bedtime - 1:30AM)
La Mesa Eco Center, QC / Thomas Morato Ave. / Da Shak, Kamias

Meet up at Hobby Depot - Morato for the day's gunbang action in Pugad Lawin.

It was a nice day of fun airsoft action! Gelo forgot to remind Jun to get his spanky new gun so Layla (my HK51 rifle) has to suffer the hands of the Big Ork Bozz yet again. Good thing injuries that time was kept to a minimum with only several welts here and there. Jeng who had a nasty gash on his face from last week's games wasn't present because of work.

knockout sa twins si Goliath

At home, I thought better to spend time with the twins first before sleeping. Kahit sooobrang pagod at antok na ko. It all fades playing with these kulitis! They're growing up even faster when I was always out of the house.

*****

Ayun, zombie-mode ako up until today. Just now I was having another round of coffee (impyernes, ang sarap ng Dark Mocha... hope it'L stay as a regular) with Boy Bawang combo! I can barely keep my wits up but I'm looking forward (finally!) for a good sleep this evening.

Ang ayoko lang, a LOT of good film have escaped and still escaping me already because of my lakwatsa spree - Kung Fu Panda, Narnia 2, Wanted, Hulk 2, what else... alam ko meron pa eh (Caregiver? Hee hee!).

All in all, the week was a sweet escape. I want to maximize everything while I can. Most likely, everything will not be like these kapag may GF na ako. And like what I learned from Bozz Gelo (who has equally varied circle of friends too), it pays to cycle around your friends and loved ones and allot equal attention with them as much as possible.

Thanks God for ALL of these!

You Can't Lose What You Don't Have

Got this from an email. It's a briefly nice read for something goofy. Ako na lang ang naglagay ng pamagat, wala eh. Edited some words too, para mas laughtrip.

"The Boy Who Has A Temper Tantrum"

Once upon a time, there was a lonely baby boy sitting in the park, crying ever so badly.

A wise philosopher happened to pass by on his Harleys, and asked caringly...

The baby boy said...

Then the baby boy took his wallet and showed the philosopher a picture of his cute little girlfriend...
(Awwwwww, so cute!!! - obi)

After looking at the photo, the philosopher laughed thunderously, clutching his beer belly. He said with a snort...

"DEMMIT, YOU ARE SO DUMB, MAN!"

The baby boy went absolutely crazy, dived on the lawn, and flailed his stubby arms and legs around, crying out loud! He yelled at the snickering philosopher...

Then, with a tone same as those of Professor Dumbledore's, the philosopher smugly told his wisecrack...

Instantly, the baby boy felt better as if somebody gave him a pacifier...
The Catch...
If you look at what you do not have in life, you don't have anything. If you look at what you have in life, you have everything.

The Moral...
Don't get sleepy at work so you won't busy yourself with cheaply-done comic strips.

*****

Space Hulk by GW

Before that night, we were at our same ol' tambayan in Virramall. Geek mode muna as Sandico brought a classic 1989 board game "Space Hulk" by Games Workshop. We just played it until store closing. Before heading to Kei's place, bumili muna kami ng chicha... a whole grilled chikken and 2 chunks of liempo. Heart stopper.

*****

On the next day (despite my two-hour sleep), I was still able to barely drag myself to Tomas Morato to meetup with the airsoft team (Screaming BB's and People's Park). Surprise guest appearance si Storm na matagal na naming hindi nakalaro. May ipapa-blind date daw sa akin na tropa nyang looking for a "serious BF". Hehe... touched ako, kasi ako ang naisip nyang "serious BF" material. Haha.

L-R: Jan Liit, Kornpleks, Fine Young Cannibal, Spiderman

SBB Attendance: Korn, Storm, Jeng, Jorge, Super Inggo, Chewy, Garrick Astley, Obi, Topher, Jan Liit, Hans, Omeng, Jubay Bomber

Games were at San Jose del Monte, Bulacan. Actually isang "game" lang for me since I slept on the first round of games. Di ko na kaya yung antok after namin kumain (baboy reflex). Umuulan ulan pa so mas malakas ang tawag ng Nyu-Nyu Land (juan tamad reflex). Games were hosted by the local airsoft team, SJAG. Umuwi din kami agad dahil naging consistent yung bagsak ng ulan na parang hindi na nya trip tumigil.

Dinner na lang at Bagoong Club Resto near Morato. Panalo ang mga pagkain. Sakto lang for its price tag.

Naka-uwi ako ng maaga, after namin tumambay ng sobrang saglit sa Shak. Nakapaglaro pa kami ng matagal ng mga kambal.

The Wonder Twins... Liz and Lei (or vice versa)

Hmm... siguro ang carrier single namin dito ay "Bush is Antichrist".

I think.
